The school was started in 2014 by Kam Assi, Director at Abraxas Photography and Abraxas Commercial.
Kam has been teaching on a freelance basis for many years after successfully studying formal teaching qualifications. He's taught at a range of different photography qualification levels in Bedford and London including HND, HNC, A Level, BTEC, City & Guilds, NCFE and a number of shorter specialist courses. In 2013 Kam decided to set up his own courses as he found that most adults interested in learning photography wanted to do exactly that...learn photography, learn how to use their cameras and take better photos. The formal beginners courses such as C&G and NCFE were very theory based involving a lot of written work and research and what started as a hobby became a burden for so many students with deadlines and essays to write.
The idea was to run a course designed around the student's needs and to show them they could improve their photography in a matter of minutes rather than starting out with studying the history of photography. Photography is something that is best learned through practice.
Every course includes a series of short projects which are carefully designed to help students learn and enjoy at the same time and students need not worry if they miss any classes as they helped all the way along.
Kam's experience in the photography industry stretches back to almost 35 years and he has successfully run his business for 25 years which continues to thrive with a small team now specialising in Video, Drone Filming and Media Design as well as Photography.
So students who enrol on any course be it a group session or 1:1 are taught by someone who is working in the industry as well as having formal teaching qualifications and experience, so it's very much the best of both worlds for the students.
There's a greater number of photographers offering courses and workshops, even though they may be exceptional photographers they may not be qualified to teach and good teaching like anything has to be studied and learned.
It's not however as one-man team as Kam's team at Abraxas also cover the administration for the school making everything efficient.
Robert is also a key member of the team and covers most of the classes with Kam, his expertise in both photography and image editing is outstanding and he builds a close relationship with the students.
All in all the courses are student focused, we want every single student regardless of their ability to come along and enjoy learning photography. Everyone is given the opportunity to learn at their own pace with no pressure.
